Paul (Romain Duris), devastated by his separation from girlfriend Anna (Joana Preiss), decides to move back to Paris to live with his father (Guy Marchand) and younger brother Jonathan (Louis Garrel).
Jonathan (from whose viewpoint the film is narrated) is a part-time student who spends most of his time fooling around and womanising - but, it turns out, is really concealing a deep wound: he has never really got over the death of their sister.
When the boys' beautiful and glamorous mother (Marie-France Pisier) turns up, Paul's depression seems briefly alleviated - but her presence only serves to add complexity to the already taut network of relationships in the household.
