Massoud Amir Behrani (Ben Kingsley), an Iranian immigrant living in California, becomes embroiled in a legal dispute with former drug addict Kathy (Jennifer Connelly).
The dispute is over a house which Massoud has bought and which Kathy lost unfairly to the county.
Neither Kathy nor Massoud has broken the law, so they find themselves involved in a difficult moral dilemma.
